Beacons of silence 

Local church steeples may not be that tall, but from the top of a mound they seem to tower above everything else. Built in late Romanesque-early Gothic style, many Groningen churches give a sober, robust feel. You can almost always just walk in for a moment of silence and often you will hear only your own footsteps. Doors are generally open. If not, the neighbours will lend you the key.
