Bike Tour: Pieterburen Waddenhoes – short - 3 days

Peace, space and fresh air . . .and so much to see and discover from our apartments in the Hogeland, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea Area. Hidden ‘borgs’ and ancient mound villages, birdlife on the Lauwersmeer, small beaches and plenty of room for water sports. Beautifully coloured fishermen's houses at the old ‘seaport’ in Zoutkamp situated on the Reitdiep, the only sailing route into the capital. How about a day or two on the islands? ..... Schiermonnikoog and the German island of Borkum are easily reached from Pieterburen. Cycle north along the seawall to the Netherlands’ smallest seaport, Noordpolderzijl, and stop for a coffee at 't Zielhoes. Cycle south to the 2020 ‘most beautiful village’ of Winsum. Explore the Reitdiepdal, a beautiful valley bursting with birdlife. Try a terrace at Hammingh or Garnwerd aan Zee and discover the lively university town of Groningen nearby.

Route
Day 1: Arrival Pieterburen
Day 2: ‘Borg’ estates and ‘weird’ villages
Day 3: The Reitdiep, Lauwersmeer National Park and the Zeedijk

Day 1:    Arrival Pieterburen

Arrive in Pieterburen and settle in at your accommodation. Then jump right in with a visit to the seal centre or bike to Noordpolderzijl, the Netherlands’ smallest seaport and a favourite with the locals. Get your first taste of Groningen at dinner in the village and stroll to the seawall to admire the ever-changing mudflats.

Day 2:    ‘Borg’ estates and ‘weird’ villages
55 km

Today is a day to cycle the Hogeland and explore real Groningen countryside with vast estates, beautiful mound villages and shady woodlands. Add lush green dikes, red brick houses, winding canals and the water of the Wad and you have the perfect introduction to North Groningen. Discover the magic of 't Zielhoes near Noordpolderzijl, the Netherlands’ smallest seaport. Get a glimpse of the Menkemaborg in Uithuizen and the Hoogeland open air museum in Warffum. Ride past Wierden villages of Kantens, Middelstum, Onderdendam, Rasquert and Usquert on your way back to Pieterburen and enjoy time on a terrace or the tranquillity of ‘Domies Toen’ botanical garden.

Optionally, you can choose to take a day trip into the city or get a breath of fresh air on Schiermonnikoog or the German island of Borkum. (Ferries services to the islands may not be available due to Corona virus restrictions. Please enquire at the time of booking.)

Day 3:    The Reitdiep, Lauwersmeer National Park and the Zeedijk

Few people know that Groningen too is a land of water, a fact you will discover today. First you ride to Leens, where the Verhildersum Borg and Estate show the history of Northwest Groningen and an excellent coffee stop awaits. The regional market is on every third Saturday of the month, then it’s on to the Houwerzijl tea factory and a unique combination of the sole Dutch tea museum, fragrant tea shop and an atmospheric tearoom with perhaps the most extensive tea menu in the world. A few kilometres further on you reach the former seaport at Zoutkamp, with its colourful fishermen's houses beautifully situated on the Reitdiep. For more water and beaches as well cycle along the Lauwersmeer and stop to fish in Lauwersoog. Riding inside and outside the dikes, you cycle along the Wadden Sea then back across the Westpolder to Pieterburen.
